Dear OO,

I have MS Word and Excel files. Are these readable in openoffice.org? Are there any problems in transporting files from MS modules (Excel, WORD, Power Point...) to OpenOffice. org? If so what are they?
Well, what you have here are volunteers supporting OOo, but then considering the whole concept of open source I suppose this list is as good as anything to be looked at as "Dear OO" for purposes of support work on this type of issue <grin>.

That said, OOo will read the vast majority of MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint files without a problem. What it will not do is open password protected files (the upcoming 2.0 will do that presuming you have the password in question), nor can it handle macros written in VBA that many be found in those files (and that's not changing).

If the file is heavily formatted, that may not transfer perfectly--but, to be honest, if the file is heavily formatted it may have problems going between versions of Microsoft's products or even on machines with different printers installed (things like page breaks are items that "move" often in such cases). OOo 1.1.4 (the current stable version) will also tend to have problems with complex Word tables--there are fewer such issues in the 2.0 version that is upcoming (out in beta, but not a version you should trust with work you can't afford to lose).
