Try breaking the document up into smaller files. When I worked with long documents, I would put each chapter into a separate file, then I would use a merge print when I printed the document. You can do this in OO.o by using a master document. You will need to list each file in the master document in the sequence in which you want it to print. Another advantage to this procedure is that in case a file is corrupted, you haven't lost the entire document.
