I have found that none of the major word processors (WP, Word, OO) do
envelopes very easlily. I have been using a separate program called
"Labels Unlimited" version 2.0 which I bought years ago from Parson's
Technology. Works great on envelopes of ANY size.
I agree that Word's method is far from foolproof--but OpenOffice.org
takes the problem to new heights of complexity <grin>. And, from the
standpoint of viewing OOo as an option when converting from Word, you
have to remember that those converting long ago either gave up on
printing envelopes from the word processor entirely (in which case
they'll likely not try the Envelope function in OOo either) *OR* they
have forgotten the hassle they had getting Word (or WordPerfect) to
work. So now the comparison will between Word (which they have working
perfectly for envelopes) and OpenOffice.org's system which will almost
certainly fail miserably when they try to use it.
Honestly, I don't know of anyone who has gotten OOo's envelope function
to produce anything resembling an envelope on the first try. What is
produced by just "following the prompts" in OOo generally doesn't even
look vaguely like an envelope on the screen, and certainly doesn't print
like one on the printer <grin>.
