I can't remember now how I got the Sort icon on the Standard toolbar.
But I did it over again just now and the new one is not grayed out. The
new one does not have an icon, but that doesn't matter to me. I
unchecked the first one that I added, since it doesn't work anyway. So
the problem is resolved.

What I would really like is for the Sort dialog box to stay up
continually. As soon as I click to complete a sort order that I have
selected, the dialog box disappears and I have to call it back up
again. I need to do hundreds of sorts on the data and it wastes a lot
of time having to call the dialog box back up all the time. Does anyone
know if there is an option to make it stay up?

Also, in the Options tab for the Sort dialog box there is a choice to
"Enable natural sort." I don't know what that means, and the Help file
says nothing about it. Does anyone know what this option does?
