When you install Word viewer, it will make itself the default
application for Word documents. You'll want to reset the file
associations back to OpenOffice. Also, when you saved the document, did
you save in Word (.DOC) format? When you use Save as, select the
appropriate Word format from the drop down list. Also ensure automatic
file name extension is selected. Incidentally, when you have more than
one application associated with a file type, the first one will open if
you double click. However, you can always right click and select the
desired application. This would have been a better alternative to copy
& paste.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
If that method is not available, follow the directions listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859

To avoid the file association problem in the future, install Word viewer
first and then OpenOffice.org.

BTW, it's curious that you're using names of the 1st person to walk on
the moon and his wife in your email.
