To create a character style instead of a paragraph style, you have only to choose the kind of style by clicking on the right button on the left before to click on "New style from selection" . In other words, firstly show character styles and you create a new character style.

Pardon my intrusion, but as a devoutly keyboard oriented user who finds the mouse difficult to use, I gotta ask if there is a keyboard method to do this?

Now I'm intruding, but here's a start:
o Press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting window.
o Use Tab (or Shift+Tab) twice to move focus to the style type buttons.
o Use the arrow keys to move to the required style type.
o Press Enter to confirm your choice.
o Press Tab again to move focus to the right-hand buttons.
o Use the arrow keys to move to the New Style from Selection button.
o Press down-arrow to drop down the menu.
o Press Alt+N (or down-arrow and then Enter) to select New Style from Selection.
o Type the new style name and press Enter to OK it.

The easiest way to bring the Styles and Formatting window back into focus (as you will need to do) from the keyboard is probably to press F11 twice - to toggle it off and then on again.

I trust this helps.
