Maybe other options are as good, maybe not.  OpenERP is probably too
big, these might be alternatives to Quicken:

Either way, it would be a strong case for open formats and documented
APIs for your banking services.

What is your definition of 'heavy-duty photo manipulation'?  I can
relate to the photoshop addiction, I used it since before version 2
until version 7.  But my use can no longer be called heavy duty.  Since
I hardly use Photoshop these days (Adobe never came out with a linux
version, GIMP meets all my RGB needs much faster) I've stopped buying it.
