No need to chmod, etc., etc. Put the fonts in /home/<username>/.fonts
restart OOo. Works for me - downloaded from:
http://www.ars-chemia.net/Permanent_Files/links.htm - put them in
~/.fonts - opened OOo and they work with no issues.
