Not that I'm aware of. Worked for me without issues. When I select Chemistry SansSerif or Chemistry Serif & start typing, the standard characters work. When I add any of the added special characters they get added as well. I don't have your distro version installed (OO v3.1.3 running on Debian testing), but have tested with: OOo 3.1.1, Ubuntu OOo 3.1.1, and OOo 3.2.0 devm60.
