Creating one from scratch requires that magnetic ink toner and a special add on to most laser printers IIUC. There's an official layout now (call a local printer an he can tell you all about it) While it might be legally ok you printing the whole thing yourself, the chances of it getting screwed up by manually handling are pretty high. I would think you could print on the cheques your bank gives you though. The account info etc is already there. Better be sure you are using ink that doesn't wash away with water though!
