All you have to do is download the latest version from
www.openoffice.org and then install it. You don't have to pay anything,
register or join any project. Just use and enjoy. You are also free to
pass it around to others, so you might also introduce your students to
it. It's available for Windows, Linux, Mac and other operating systems.
When you install it, you'll be asked if you want to make it the default
application for Microsoft Office files. This is a personal choice and
can be easily changed later.
Also, make sure you have Java installed, as some OOo functions use it.
