It sounds as if you've downloaded OpenOffice.org (from the website of the same name, I hope) but not yet installed it. Generally that just means double-clicking on the downloaded file and following the installation dialogs. You should get an option to have a desktop icon that will allow you to start Impress (the PowerPoint equivalent) or any of the other components. In any case, there would be a folder for OOo in your Start menu. Once the installation is complete, you no longer need the downloaded file.
There are a lot of ways to participate in OOo, if you later decide you'd like to -- many of them require no specialized "computer person" skills.
