Sorry you're having some difficulty here, Tia, but there are a few differences
in the underlying models used by Word and Writer, so some things -- especially
to do with page styles, as this is -- will be different. This is actually a
very easy task in Writer, too:
* Insert > Footer > Default
* In the footer area, set the alignment for the page number as you
want it.
* Insert > Field > Page Number
Now each page using that page style (Default, if you haven't set up another)
will contain a footer, and the footer will contain the automatically-generated
page number.
Clear instruction, Barbara. And the only important thing you didn't mention
was how to get the numbering to start from page 2, where page 1 is some kind of
cover sheet.
I don't know how you're supposed to do it, but my method is to right click on
the page number field, select 'Fields' and insert -1 in a field called Offset.
This is so important an attribute I don't know why it doesn't show up
immediately when one chooses to insert a page number field.

I think the preferred option is to use the First Page style for the
first page (you can apply it by bringing up the Styles toolbar and
selecting the page style icon). It has no footer, and flows naturally to
the Default page style. Once you have a second page, you can set the
footer and page numbering as above on that. From there on, the Default
style will be used.
