Just a thought, have you tried Gmail? Thunderbird is fine but Google's Gmail is a snap to use. I have attached PDF files with no problem. I have three computers, one Windows and the other Ubuntu, and an old Laptop for travel, I Firefox on both computers. Since Gmail stores the mail, it looks and acts the same in Windows or Linix, or on my Laptop anywhere I happen to be.
BTW I'm just a user and have no connection with Google.
