They are probably in one of the system font folders. Check out what came
with your window manager and X server.

You don't need to use spadmin. On my FreeBSD box (and I'm sure this is
common to other *Nix variants) all I needed to do was create a .fonts
directory in my home directory (e.g. /home/user1/.fonts/) and not only
does OOo read from it, but so does just about every other app I've
opened. YMMV, HTH. FWIW, I needed this so I could add my collection of
10k fonts and OOo (nor any other app) chokes on it.
