opens___.ttf is the “Open Symbol” font. I think it’s obsolete (it’s a “hack” font, not encoded according to Unicode), but I’d be slow to recommend removing it, just in case.

To install additional fonts (whether Opentype or Truetype) just put them into /usr/local/share/fonts if they’re for everybody who uses your computer or into /home/***/.fonts [where *** is your user name] if they’re just for you.

I’m not an expert; the points above were learnt the hard way, and may even contain some errors. If in doubt ...

Hi, Séamas (and everyone else).
I'm running OOo 2.4.1 on Kubuntu 8.04, and newly also OOo 3.1 on Kubuntu 9.10, on a desktop as the only user.

K 8.04 has most fonts stored in /usr/share/fonts/truetype, inclusive of a /ttf-dejavu subfolder containing the entire family of DejaVu fonts. Additionally, in /usr/local/share/fonts there are the 4 DejaVuSerifCondensed*,ttf and 4 DejaVuSansCondensed*.ttf variants .
There are no fonts in /home/john/.fonts.

I happen to particularly like these DejaVu*Condensed fonts, but in OOo they cannot be selected (though all the other DejaVu fonts can). Can I do anything to have the DejaVu*Condensed fonts available and thus selectable in OOo?
Thanks in advance.
