I have been teaching first-year university students computer use since
late April when the University of Lubumbashi opened a 15-20 machine
computer lab for the Faculty of Human Sciences and Humanities. Many of
the students have not even used typewriters, so they have many
challenges to get to any kind of performance in 6 weeks! I have
installed OpenOffice on each machine, at the network administrator's
request; this is probably wise, since we have experienced frequent
problems with the fiberoptic connection to the server a mile away, as it
is dependent on power being available at both the server and the
computer lab and also at a powered junction in between--often quite an
assumption in a third-world country like Congo.
Today I experienced a problem that I could not resolve while dealing
with students at 17 different machines. On two machines, the dotted
text-delimitation lines that show the location of headers, footers, and
text blocks on the OpenOffice page would disappear after about 15
seconds. You could click "Affichage" (View?) and re-tick the parameter,
but it would again disappear after 15 seconds. In the limited time
available, I could not see an obvious explanation or solution in the
Help files.
