Full marks for trying, but you've missed the one place you do need to
make a change:
o Go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Options, and remove the tick
from "Apply numbering - symbol: *".
(At least, that's where it is on my version 3.1.1.)

Brian, I've tested about everything I know to do, and it is not doing
anything automatic yet... Thanks for giving me that one last place to
