You are probably getting it from: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj-4.4 If you don't need it, you can purge the packages: $ sudo apt-get purge gcj-4.4-jre-headless gcj-jre-headless @Dave: java is currently at java 6 update 20 (<http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp>).
