I think it should be possible to copy most of the data and if the path of the OOo installation is the same you should be able to copy even all the data without problems. What Brian is missing is the sversion.ini file that OOo1.x looks for in his "application data" folder. So he first must use the OOo setup to create a new user directory together with the sversion.ini file. After this the new user folder can be overwritten by the data from the backup. (Of course "sversion.ini" could also be recovered from a backup or created manually.) Remark: OOo2.0 doesn't need an sversion.ini anymore. So in a similar case with that version it will be sufficient to copy the userdata folder to the appropriate place.
