I completed my M.Sc thesis last year in OOo Writer, which had a lot of mathematical formulae in the body of the text. I used the route

    Insert / Formula

and a section at the bottom of the page opens up to write out the required formula. Once you are happy with the lay-out (which is just a way of laying out the text according to specific positions and can easily be learned or looked up) then just mouse back into the main body of the text and then you can carry on typing words.

Aside from the above, perhaps you can share what problems you are experiencing when you say that the standard approach "doesn't work" for you. What does that actually mean?
