OK, I have a Laserjet 4+, which is the predecessor to the 5 series.
They even use the same toner cartridge, although probably there are
differences in the driver.

Just now I opened OOo 3.1.1 on Fedora 11 x86_64 (the OOo version, not
the version from the Fedora repos). I created an envelope and typed a
fictitious address. In Format > Page I set it to Envelope #10 and set
the page orientation to landscape.

When I printed it I set the printer properties to Envelope #10 and
landscape orientation as well. I placed the blank envelope at the left
edge of the manual feed tray, facing up, with the right edge of the
envelope pointing in. I chose that way to put the envelope in the tray
because HP thoughtfully provided an icon of an envelope stamped in the
plastic showing me how to insert it. Other than a couple paper jams, it
printed just fine. The paper jams reminded me why I never print
envelopes on my laser printers.

I don't know if that helps or not.

I didn't try printing checks because I don't have your accounting
software. I do remember a long time ago printing page size checks from
Quickbooks on Windows to a Laserjet, and I had to put the checks in
face down. Drove me nuts because I always forgot. Thank goodness
someone invented debit cards and electronic bill pay.

Sorry I can't offer any more suggestions.
