I think the key is to get rid of the soffice.bin processes. I'm not sure, but it seems the soffice.exe processes are "children" of soffice.bin (they vanish when you close the soffice.bin processes). There's probably a separate swriter.exe for each open text document, not sure if they're children of soffice.exe or not but I've never been stuck after closing all of the soffice.bin processes (Quickstarter may have one, but I never have that going).
Task Manager is always open on my system (minimized) so I'll keep an eye on this to see if there are any symptoms or patterns to the problem over time.
