A half *hour*??? Just to *install* it???

On your system, the install should take considerably less than 5 minutes...

Are you installing it over an internet connection? That's the only way I
can see for it to take that long.

The tone of your remark is harsher than you perhaps meant it to be.

I do not understand what you mean "installing over an internet connection." Everyone who does not use a CD to install OO.o must install from the web. One downloads the executable installer from the OOo web site then runs the executable installer.

Running the installation program itself takes more than 8 minutes here, but there are other things to do besides just run the installer.

Fetching installer, 5+ minutes, installation, 8+ minutes. I ran OO.o to check settings, "load at startup" was not checked. When first started, OO.o demanded I register, and sent me to Oracle's web site, which would not accept my login name and password I had retained from Suns' web site. After many attempts, it told me it couldn't do this because of a "server error." A substantial waste of time.

The time I quoted included download, install, and registration time.

The time to download and run the installer was about 15 minutes, and is consistent with the time taken to install earlier versions of OO.o.

I probably should have been a bit more careful and should not have included wasted registration time.

When you respond to questions on this mailing list, it would be well to be more gentle.

What do you mean by "demanded I register"?

I only register on the big version changes, like 2.x.x to 3.0.x and then 3.1.0, then 3.2.0. I did not do a registration for this past update. Also I install on so many computers, may with either no Net connection or dial-up, I never register on other computers except one.
Then only once.

I am a firm believer in downloading OOo and burning it for others to install so they do not have to take the time for themselves, many who only have dial-up and would
not, or cannot, take the time to download it for themselves.

I even unpack the files for them, so they do not have to wait.

Your time is not too bad for an install time, and I have seen much longer,
and installed on systems that took longer. That is the lot of the guy who
has to sit there waiting for one piece of software or another to install. I remember
installing software taking hours. Even now, updating Ubuntu from the past
version to the 10.04 version took hours and hours downloading over broadband
all the needed files and then the install itself.

So whenever someone thinks a download/install of 30 - 60 minutes is long, remember it could be much worse, even with a 4 month old computer, for downloading and installing
software.
