Sure. Tested on Kubuntu 10.04, OpenOffice.org 3.1 or 3.2 (sorry, I'm
not there at the moment) would have the File -> Versions menu item
grey and inaccessible when opening .doc files. Opening an .odt file,
or starting a new file, returned this menu item to operation.

Confirmed with Ubuntu 9.10 with OO.o 3.1. Also happens if you save as
to a .doc file.
A possible explanation is that .doc does not store the version information.
