My interim method is to use "save as" to save the "read only" copy of
the file, then open the saved file. Thats getting to be a pain in the
butt.

Mark,
Are you opening the files from with-in your mail reader or saving them
to disk then opening them? If the former the that is the problem as the
files are opened in a temp directory and the file system marks them read
only.
