Every file that is sent to me from outside sources opens as "read

"read only". This holds true for .odt files and for various MS Office
files.
I can't believe this is right. Can anyone suggest a solution?
My interim method is to use "save as" to save the "read only" copy of
the file, then open the saved file. Thats getting to be a pain in the
butt.

Mark,
Any luck?

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away -- school is getting ready to
start, and I'm getting ready for that (I teach).
Yes, I'm opening them from within the mail program (mostly gmail, but
sometimes First Class (it's what my school district uses).
Sounds like my only choice is to "save as" to get around it if I want to
open it up without leaving the mail program.
Thanks for explaining it to me.
