Maybe this extension will help:

Have installed that but am not too clear how it is used.
The web site says:
"This extension will add two new items to the File - Templates
menu that allows to assign a new template to documents. All
styles and formatting will be loaded from that template and
the documents will behave as it was created using that template.
New menu items are:
* File - Templates - Assign template (current document)...
* File - Templates - Assign template (folder)... "
but does not describe how the mechanism works.
Could someone provide a simple example of what the two 'Assign'
actions actually *do*, please?
Seems to be self explanatory to me.
(1) Say you start a "Default" new document then decide to use a template
you have saved. Using the changer should change the styles used. The
style names would have to be the same or you would have to manually
update each.
(2) An example here would be using styles to write books. Several books
are written and waiting to be published, all stored in a directory.
Before sending to be published you decide to change a heading or font
style. Instead of having to open each document for update, use the
second to update all the documents in a single pass.
This being said I have never used either of these so can not say how
they work.
