I need some help with how to change the formatting (e.g. first line
indentation) of a paragraph style. The F11 "Styles and Formatting" and
"Edit
Paragraph Style" do not work for me and the help wasn't very helpful :(

Thanks

Unfortunately I have the Swedish version but hopefully I can help you
anyway, if I understand your problem correctly.

I don't know exactly what you edited at ”Edit paragraph style”, but this
worked for me:
F11 → Right click the style you want to edit → Select ”Ändra…” (should be
something like ”Change…” in English) → Click the tab called ”Indrag och
avstånd” (probably something like ”Indentation and spacing”) → set ”Första raden” (”First row” or ”First line”, I'd guess) to something, such as 1,00
cm (or 1.00 cm if ”.” is your decimal separator).

All your paragraphs using that style should now be changed accordingly,
unless you did some format settings within a paragraph or so, I think you can ”ruin” a paragraph that way… If so, try to reset the paragraph to the default style first, by clicking ”Format → Default formatting” or by Ctrl+m,
then apply your style again to the same paragraph. You can apply a style
from the F11 window by setting the cursor in the paragraph and then double
click a style in the F11 window.

Also note that if you use Go-OO, F11 means full screen, not the styles and
formatting window, but it seems like you use the usual OpenOffice.org
version.

If you try this and it still doesn't work, exactly what happens?

Doesn't work. These are my steps:

   1. First I did what you suggested, selected my paragraph and Format >
Default Formatting which gave me Indent *Before text* 1.27cm and *First
   Line* -0.64cm

When I do that, I get 0,00 cm everywhere.

2. Format > Paragraph and changed Indent *Before text* 2.00cm and *First
Line* -0.13cm This changed the selected para to what I wanted the
   formatting to be.

Now you changed the format of that particular paragraph, not the style.

   3. F11 > double click Default and at this point the para formatting
changes to *Before text* 1.27cm and *First Line* -0.64cm which is not
what I want. So I must be telling it to change to the Default rather than me
wanting to cahnge the default style if you know what I mean.

Yes, now you told it to use the default style once again.

But what about if you change the actual style or create a new one that suits your needs? Create a new style by right click an existing one (in the F11 window) and select ”New style”, or maybe it is just ”New…”. Give the new style a name at the Administration tab and change whatever else you want to change in the other tabs. Now assign it to the paragraphs that you want it on.

But as I said in another message, I don't think this works for numbered paragraphs, but I am not 100% sure about that.
