There was usually a set of icons created in the START menu. Look in "(All) Programs" - the All is dependant on the version of windows you are running. I said "There was ..." because the latest versions do place an icon on the desktop. To put an icon onto your desktop from the start menu Right Click the entry in the start menu Select "Send to - Desktop (Create shortcut)" and left click it. Alternatively look for the "quickstarter" down by the clock in the system tray and click on it.
