Today is my day to get my printer set up finally. It is a big-ass Laserjet
5SiMx network printer. This is a PostScript Level 2 printer, has four paper
trays that hold 3000 sheets, including up to tabloid (11 x 17) or A3,
duplexer, etc.

I am running OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu 5.04, amd-64. Using Add New
Printer I got the printer set up.

I decided to try FireFox first, mainly because it was already open on the
desktop. I had a page from Adobe.com open, so I just printed it. This
worked great -- pulled from the correct tray, duplexed, etc. The print dialog
box identified the printer as it should.

And then I tried OpenOffice.org Writer. This is the application I print from
the most on my Windows machine. And none of the options that this
printer is capable of were present -- because the printer was not listed.
Instead it listed only "Generic Printer."

I tried everything I could think of (shutting down Writer and restarting it,
etc.) to get it to see the printer, but have had no luck. I've carefully gone
through everything in options and configurations that I could find. I have just
the one printer installed. There is no other printer for it to have found. In
other words, "Generic Printer" is something OpenOffice.org made up on its
own.

After I gave up trying to figure out I tried printing from several other
applications. All found the printer and were happy to print to it, displaying
all the options available.

Does anyone know what I have to do to tell OpenOffice.org to look in the
printer folder for available printers?
