I have a Windows 2000 computer with StarOffice 7.0. No application on
that computer ever has a problem printing to the Laserjet 5SiMX, including
StarOffice. This computer is on my home ethernet, as is the Laserjet
5SiMx. All options available on the 5SiMx are listed in the print dialog box
in each application.

I have a Linux laptop running 64-bit Ubuntu 5.04 which is also connected to
the home ethernet. All applications on it also print fine to the same printer,
except for OpenOffice.org 1.1.3. OpenOffice.org doesn't realize the printer
is there. Instead it subsitutes "Generic Printer" as the only choice in the
print dialog box. And when I print to "Generic Printer" nothing goes to the
printer. Which is probably just as well, as "Generic Printer" has no way to
specify paper size, which tray, duplex or simplex, resolution, or any of the
other features of the printer.

Note that the 5SiMX is properly configured in Linux. In all other applications
on the Linux computer the print dialog box lists "Laserjet 5SiMX" as the
printer to print to.

I have no idea where OpenOffice.org came up with "Generic Printer." If it
couldn't find a printer, then it should have simply said so. But that problem
aside, there must be a bug somewhere in the Linux version where it fails to
look at the printer folder to see what printer choices are available.
