I'm installing 10.04 now. BTW I tested using the standard Ubuntu 10.10
version:
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1.1
and it works fine. So it may be the ppa version you are using. I tested
by opening a new document, setting the autosave to 5 minutes, saved the
doc, made a few changes & waited 5 minutes while monitoring the autosave
folder. File autosaved & when I closed it the .bak of the document is there.

Before I finish the install & load the ppa version, please advise to the
other questions I asked re:

Before you file a bug on launchpad, can you please detail exactly what
you've tried so far? Also verify that your backup path is default:
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup or let us know if you've
changed the path.
