OK. Unfortunately you appear to be running a version from a PPA
(Personal Package Archive):
https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa
https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa/+build/1926554
So you'd need to check:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs
to see if any bugs have been filed regarding that problem. If not, then
you can file one from that same page.

Unfortunately I just donated my last test machine that had 10.04 on it
(I only have 10.10, 11.04 & 11.10b on the others). However I've a spare
drive in another that I may be able to load up with 10.04 and try the
PPA later this weekend... I need a 10.04 for testing anyway.

Before you file a bug on launchpad, can you please detail exactly what
you've tried so far? Also verify that your backup path is default:
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup or let us know if you've
changed the path.
Note: I usually just go ahead and create a folder in my ~/Documents
folder: ~/Documents/OOoBackup so that I can easily find/clean them. Then
change the default to the ~/Documents/OOoBackup. It's easier than me
going though the hundreds of hidden/hidden-subfolders I have. Plus I
have multiple versions of OOo (and LO) on my system with version named
folders - example:
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org/3/user/
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org3/3/user/
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org34/3/user/
