Thank you, Mike. I tried your suggestion. Here's the weird part: I got what looked like positive feedback from the "ping" command, and yet when I next went to the Open Office program, I got that same "can't establish connection" thing. I "know" there's an update because in the top right of my screen when I get into the program, is a green arrow pointing downward.

What it says on my screen when I ping'ed the update36.services.openoffice.org server:

Pinging SD-web2.StarOffice.DE [192.18.197.109] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.18.197.109: bytes=32 time=122 ms TTL=240
Reply from 192.18.197.109: bytes=32 time=123 ms TTL=240
Reply from 192.18.197.109: bytes=32 time=126 ms TTL=240
Reply from 192.18.197.109: bytes=32 time=121 ms TTL=240

Ping statistics for 192.18.197.109:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
   Minimum = 121 ms, Maximum = 126 ms, Average = 123 ms

That's all it says, and I don't know very much, but it looks to me as if my pinging worked fine, and yet I still get that "can't connect" message after I do the ping and try to connect using the program.

Any other advice? TIA -- Amy

I know there's an update to my Open Office 3.3 program which I'm using
on a Windows XP computer, but I can't get it for love or money. Every
time I try, I get the message "Checking for an update failed" followed
by another message lower on the same screen, "Could not establish
network connection to update36.services.openoffice.org."

What is the difference between Open Office 3.6 and Open Office 3.3? I
don't use Open Office very much anyway, mainly for 2 purposes:

'update36' isn't to do with the OOo version - it's the server that holds the software. The message is simply saying your machine can't contact the server. Try pinging it (in a cmd.exe window, 'ping update36.services.openoffice.org').

The latest version, btw, is 3.3.0, or so the web site says, so why you 'know there's an update' to your existing 3.3, I'm not sure.

You can always download the latest and greatest from the openoffice.org website; there's no smaller 'update kit' anyway afaik.
