Thanks to all who responded. I got past the problem for the moment. I did not get it tp print properly. Instead I e-mailed the prof and asked if I could e- mail the work to him as a PDF, explaining why I found it necessary to ask for the favor. He agreed, and it is now "handed in" and on time. Whew!
As for the problem, I suspect it is a printer driver problem. But it is not, as one person suggested, a font substitution issue. I have had all font substitutions turned off in the Windows driver for a long time. And I just double-checked, and they are all still turned off. And even if they were not, what the heck font would a PostScript Laserjet 5SiMx substitute for SIL_IPA93? Pretty sure that is not one of the "gang of 35." :) Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem might be. I appreciate the fact that a few others here reported the same problem. Yet at least one person had no problem. And no one else in the class has the problem. Someone else suggested exporting as PDF and printing as image. Already been there. That was one of the things I tried yesterday. It made no difference. And that fact seems very strange. Evidently "print as image" doesn't mean "convert everything to bitmaps." Or if it does, it is not converting the screen image as a bitmap. Because it is corrrect on screen; it just prints several characters incorrectly on the printer. As I mentioned before, I tried other IPA fonts. All displayed the same problem, and all were worse than the SIL_IPA93 font. However, after class today I asked the prof if he could suggest other fonts, even if I have to pay for them. He gave me a couple possibilities and I am going to explore them. I am not hopeful, however. Since it is happening with all the IPA fonts I have tried so far, I suspect it will happen with all others as well. In other words, I think the problem is in OpenOffice.org Writer, my computer, or the printer driver, not in the font. On the other hand, when you double-click on the font to display it, in the information at the top of the window it says it was created in Fontographer 4.0. That is pretty damn old software ... er, abandonware. Anyway, thanks to everyone who responded. I'll keep this list updated if I find a solution or at least figure out where the problem is. In the meantime, any other suggestions are more than welcome. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
