Its not a large spreadsheet, however I've always found that if the
file is in the OOo format (either .sxc or .ods ) the speed is a little
better since it doesn't need to do the row/col width adjusting.

For me (although not required for starting OOo), I've always turned
off 'show icons in menu' which seems to speed things up a little.

There are some speed advantages with version 2.0 coming up, but then
the interface is more graphical so there are tradeoff's.
