Hi Robert

I cannot respond to your exact experience, but a common cause of this
sort of behaviour is the language setting of the document. If the
dictionary used and the language do not coincide, then the spellcheck
will not work.

Try selecting a paragraph, then right-click (or whatever the equivalent
on a Mac) Select "Character", then on the "font" tab, the language
should be shown. Compare that with the setting in Tools -Options
Language Settings - Languages
