Deja Vo! I've just been down this road. I think if you save the
NeoOffice/J file in Word format and then open it in Word, the Word
spellchecker might then work. Is seems the both NeoOffice/J and Word
have a language attribute for every character in a document. Perhaps
this attribute does not get copied to the clipboard. I'd test this but I
don't have Word on my Mac.
I did test it on my Windows 2000 PC with OpenOffice 1.1.4 and Microsoft
Word 2000 (9.0.2720). In fact, just the opposite happened. Here's what I
did:
1. Create a new OO Writer document.
2. Type the word "dsigned" in the new document.
3. Hit F7 to spellcheck. (I have autocheck off.) The spellchecker
suggested "designed" among other things, so it's working.
4. Closed spellcheck dialog without changing the word.
5. Saved the document in OO format. (.sxw)
6. Highlighted the word and used selected the Format | Character menu
selection. In the Character dialog I set the Language to "[None]" and
closed the dialog.
7. Tried the OO spellchecker. It now says everyting is fine; that is,
spellcheck failed. (Not user friendly but correct behavior, I think.)
9. Highlighted the word and copied it to the clipboard.
10. Opened a new document in Word.
11. Pasted the the word (dsigned) into the Word document.
12. Clicked the Word spellcheck icon on the toolbar. The Word
spellchecker said it is mispelled.
PASS: So copy/paste works in the Windows environment.
13. Next, using OpenOffice, saved the document (with one mispelled word
in it) in "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)" format with the name
"testoo.doc".
14. Closed this document in OO.
15. Using Word, opened "testoo.doc".
16. Clicked the Word spellcheck icon on the toolbar. The Word
spellchecker failed to find the error.
So saving a document w/ no language assigned to the characters from OO
in MS Word format seems to leave it that way for Word. This is not user
friendly but my guess it is correct behavior.
17. Closed "testoo.doc" in Word.
18. Opened "testoo.doc" in OO.
19. Highlighted the word and used selected the Format | Character menu
selection. In the Character dialog I set the Language to "English (USA)"
and closed the dialog.
20. Opened "testoo.doc" in Word.
21. Ran the spellchecker. It found that the word was mispelled.
So I think we can conclude OO is correctly communicating the character's
language attributes.
ENHANCEMENT SUGGETION
I think one of two things should be done to OO to make this more user
friendly.
Either, 1) have the spellchecker issue a warning if some characters have
no language assigned or, 2) assumen the default language when the
attribute is set to "[None]". What do you think, is this worth an
enhancement request/
