There is a wealth of information available here. May I suggest that
you begin with the Migration Guide section of the page? These documents
describe how to go from using MS Office to OOo (OpenOffice.org).
Specific documents you want concern Writer (Text documents) and Calc
(Spreadsheet).
It may seem like more information than you would want to know, but
it is well worth the time it takes to study these documents.
