I used the ctrl-shift-v function. Note: Past Special was a sub-menu option in calc, but not in writer, yet when I entered ctrl-shift-v, a sub menu popped up for me to select the type of file to write.
That was just an observation. The fun began when I found that I could not edit (move text), but the cut/copy options on the right click menu or the edit menu were grayed out.
