For what it's worth, I thought the explanation in the Beta2 installer was quite clear -- and as far as I recall the default is that OOo does *not* associate with Office documents.

I have observed that the installation default behavior has been modified in some of the more recent beta candidates. Now if M$Office, or some portion of it, is installed on the computer, the "Use as default" checkboxes are left unchecked for the portions of M$O that are installed and are automatically checked for the M$O apps that are not present. A problem is that I haven't seen this behavior documented any more than previous ones, and this has to be even more confusing to the masses.

Let's be perfectly clear that I have no empathy and even less patience for the "Barbie-Doll-'Math-is-so-difficult'" crowd. But, there is nothing that can be done to cure willful ignorance. Neither is there an excuse, except masochism, for accepting that monkey as a payload.

For the beta releases, why not have a test, rather like having to click the "I accept the license" button to determine if a user is capable of understanding what they are doing? Nothing really difficult, just the kinds of "topics" that have come up in this thread.
What is a file extension?
What is a file association?
What is a Readme file?
What is a Help file?
How do you access the Help file?
How do you find the online documentation at the OOo website?
  Etc.
Then, randomize the sequence of answer choices on each invocation so that something more than memorizing b,a,c,b has to be learned.
