The hover help works. I have someone in the office that is trying to
learn Open Office and
wanted to turn on text for the first couple of weeks to make it easier
to learn. It is hard
to do that when most of the icons become hidden.

Here is something that might help you. Make sure that Tips is
checked (ticked). Then when you put your cursor over the icon, its
description apears.
In 1.1.x, Tips is found at Tools > Tips. Make sure it has a check
(tick) mark in front of it. (Help Agent probably should be checked
[ticked] also.)
In the 2.0 betas, Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > General.

Playing with it some more I see it is as designed to accommodate
large description. I think the usability
would improve if the Icons where large enough to have two lines of
text and thinner. You also don't
need the whole text for most of the descriptions. For instance
"Hyperlink Dialog". You really only
need "Hyperlink". I also know that the extra width is needed for
other languages, but the width
could be reduced by 1/3 and still leave plenty of room.

When I set the tool bar to show Icon and Text, each icon takes up
about 3 times the space it needs.
So I get maybe 3 or 4 icons on the tool bar with the rest off the
screen. I should probably see about
12 to 13 icons.
Any one else seeing this?
PS Using 1.1.5 on windows
