Michael, I gotta ask a personal question: Why on EARTH are you using Windows
if you are already an expert in UNIX?
I'm not Michael, but I'm still on Windows because I need a decent
WYSIWYG music typesetter (I use Sibelius), Palm Desktop, and a GPS/road
atlas program (I use DeLorme Street Atlas USA). The first two I could
get with MacOS, but for the third I know of no alternative to Windows at
all.
(For what it's worth, since the revelation that Microsoft is supporting
a creationist think-tank to the tune of $1,000,000 a year, I've sworn
that I will never buy another Windows system, no matter what I have to
sacrifice. But, if things remain as they are, it /will/ cripple me
considerably.)

"The bright critics assembled in this volume will doubtless show, in
their sophisticated and ingenious new ways, that, just as /Pooh/ is
suffused with humanism, our humanism itself, at this late date, has
become full of /Pooh./"
