I am in the throes of changing over from my old computer (with W98 and MS 'Office') to a new 'budget' computer with Win.XP and a much inferior MS 'WORKS 8' (separate disk supplied and installed). Because of the very limited range of WORKS 8 I have also installed the highly recommended 'Open Office' program. While I am still learning the latter I tend, for most normal work, to use what I am most familiar with, the M/S Word but if, for example, I need to password-protect I use 'Open Office' (which provides this facility) OK so far.
The problem I have is that if I prepare any files (text or images) on the old computer in my original Windows 'Word' format and save them to a floppy but later insert that floppy in new computer the '3 ½" window immediately opens showing the 'Open Office' icons even though the actual contents are in M/S WORD format. Why has 'O/O' taken over my icon signs and can I change to the normal 'Word' icons where these apply? I can make a number of changes so that I eventually end up with the correct icon but only IN ADDITION to the 'Open Office' one (which then has to be deleted) but all this is very tiresome. Also, If I need to edit old computer work on the new one I get in terrible tangles with the two systems, usually ending up with both sets of icons, thus duplicating everything. Any comments, please
