Subject: [users] Don't know where to turn for help

My computer was built for me by a man who I can't reach anymore (he retired
and is in South America someplace). The version is Windows XP, home version
Microsoft 2000 Office Professional was installed on it, it shows in my
Add or Delete Programs" area and in the last two weeks or so, it is sending
me error messages, some part of it wants to be re-installed, but I don't
have the CD to do so, and it won't repair or reinstall without it.

I have worked with MS tech, but they tell me I must go to my OEM (which is
the man in South America) to have access to the CD he installed with, and of
course, that option is not available to me.

Also, and this is my specific question to Open Office, several of my
documents have been saved in .sxw format, and my computer won't open them.
I did a Google search on .sxw, and that led me to Open Office sites, and
that is how I found you. I don'tknow how to convert the files to a format
my computer can open. Open Office does not show in my "Add or Delete
Programs", but if I do a computer search for Open Office files and folders,
there are a lot of of them, they appear to all be Version 1.1.0

A couple of things here.....first of all it sounds like your technician was using a boot-leg version of Windows XP. An authorized Microsoft retailer would have given you a copy of Windows XP or a recovery disk. Second, someone has been DELETING files/programs without using the Add/Remove Programs function in the Control Panel.

The best way to fix this is to have a good technician first backup all your data files on a CD, reformat the hard drive, and then reinstall all the authorized software you have. Once that is done, I would recommend downloading/installing the newest version of OOo (V2.0.1). You should be able to read the .swx files off the backup CD.
