Is it possible to add a formatting text tag when working in a text editor

So in the text file you could type something like "/i italicised word/i"
that would then format the words "italicised word" as italics in Open
Office.

Yes.

Use HTML codes and save the file with extension ".HTM" or extension ".HTML".

For example, a file named FORMAT_TEST.HTML containing the text "The quick brown <i>fox<\i> jumps over the lazy <b>dog<\b>." when opened by Writer will display without the tags, with the word "fox" in italics, and the word "dog" in boldface.

This trick also works with MS Word.
