If non-subscribers were not allowed to post to this list, where would
they go to get OOo support? My understanding is that this list is
intended to be the main user support function for OOo. By making it
difficult for users to get support, insisting they subscribe to a high
traffic list, or just hoping they might stumble upon answers on the
website, we run the risk of discouraging potential users from adopting
OOo. Not to mention the competitors using it as another negative against
us.

As we well know, many non-subscribed posters are very new to computers,
or very inexperienced in the basics of computing. I seriously doubt that
most of these people have yet learnt what a mailing list is and would be
alarmed by hundreds of messages per day arriving in their nice new shiny
inbox. Even experienced users among my own customers and associates
baulk at the prospect of subscribing to such a high traffic list.

All of that said and at the risk of going over old ground again, I would
like to see OOo take a different approach to providing one-off support
for users who choose not to subscribe. I would suggest that
non-subscribed users be required to submit support requests by way of a
web based email form, with a meaningful subject line. The script to
handle this form could then format the message to clearly identify it as
coming from a non-subscribed user. Agreed, it would still need to be
moderated, but it would be better than the current situation of
(depending upon the email software) trawling through message headers.

OK, that's my 2c worth. Now I'm off to get some sleep.
