Hello Brian
Your method works most successfully and is not at all inelegant, IMHO O:-)
I've added a Subject heading to take up your footnote. In so doing I
hope I'm not infringing any social controls on this list.
Quote [/But if you want to change the Master........I still haven't
cracked that - it doesn't seem to work.../] end quote
I'm unsure what change doesn't work. Reversing your method certainly
works for me.

Don't think anyone has replied to this before: if they have and I
missed it I would be glad to know, as the solution I have doesn't seem
very elegant, and there may well be a better way. I must say, I find
everything to do with Layers and Masters and the instructions about
them in Impress somewhat confusing. No doubt things will get more
user-friendly and intuitive as the application matures.
Anyway, here's my solution to your query: go to
View>Task Pane - in the Task Pane click the "Master Pages" Tab
then go to
View>Master>Slide Master
A "Master View" window pops up.
Insert a picture in the usual way, placing it and sizing it however
you want.
In the Task Pane right-click the Master you are using and then click
"Apply to all slides"
In the "Master View" window click "Close Master View"
You'll now find your picture will appear consistently through your
slide presentation.
But if you want to change the Master........I still haven't cracked
that - it doesn't seem to work. Whether it's the program or me being
thick I'm not sure yet!
Best wishes with your presentation.

Could you please tell me how/if I can use a graphic as a header to
appear on every page using Impress?
I have read the help and FAQ but haven't managed to figure it out.
