The dialogue box that comes up gives you the option of protecting your section with a password. Since your new section now covers the entire document, effectively the entire document is now read only.

So the password protects against changes but not against opening the file? I 
must have read the Help wrong.

This kind of protection is very insecure, as the Help file warns, mostly a method to protect against *accidental changes and casual mischief*
